ECOMIX C – One Media, Multiple Solutions
ECOMIX C is a unique, pre-blended filtration media that reduces hardness, iron, manganese, and tannins* — all in a single-tank system.
It installs and regenerates just like a standard water softener but treats multiple water problems at once.
💡 Why install two tanks when one can do the job?
How It Works
Simply load and regenerate ECOMIX C, then operate the system like a softener.
When regenerated with regular water softener salt, the media self-classifies into five layers:
- Inert layer – stabilizes flow and supports upper media.
- Ferrosorb® – adsorbs and oxidizes soluble, organic, and colloidal iron; reduces manganese.
- HumiSorb® – removes natural organic matter (tannins / TOC).
- Cation resin – softens water by exchanging hardness minerals.
- Quartz support bed – ensures even flow and consistent backwashing.
When to Use ECOMIX C
Water treatment professionals choose ECOMIX C when the water has multiple issues that would otherwise require several tanks.
Ideal for:
- Well water with iron, hardness, and some organics*
- Mixed contaminant applications
- Residential and light commercial systems

Surface Water and Tannin Considerations*
- Tannin treatment may not always be a single-tank solution.
- Ecomix C can be used for water from shallow wells near lakes or ponds. But additional treatment will likely be required because the water may contain high TOC, tannins, or microbiological contamination.
- ECOMIX C should not be used to treat surface water (lakes, rivers, canals, ponds).
- Surface water must first be treated with:
- Chlorination
- Sediment filtration
- Activated carbon filtration
- ECOMIX C should not be used solely for tannin or organic matter removal. Use it to soften water and reduce organics together, not for tannin removal alone.
- For tannin-heavy or colored water, contact Urbans Aqua for guidance.
To confirm tannin levels:
- Use a certified lab or LaMotte tannin test kit (requires a 30-minute reaction time).
- Once complete, send your water analysis, tannin test results, and a photo of the water in a white bucket to Urbans Aqua .
Conditions for Operation

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I regenerate with untreated water?
Yes. Regenerating with untreated or raw water does not affect the performance of ECOMIX.
Why is the softening capacity of ECOMIX C lower than standard softener resin?
It isn’t lower. The cation resin portion of ECOMIX C is rated lower because each bag contains five components, not just cation resin. The softening resin is one of those five layers.
Should I use resin cleaners or salt with resin cleaners?
No. Do not use resin cleaners or salts containing additives. There have been several cases where resin cleaners reduced system efficiency. Use only regular softener salt and follow proper regeneration sequencing.
Can I use half a bag of ECOMIX C?
Yes – but shake the bag well before use. Each bag contains five components in specific ratios. If using half a bag, thoroughly mix before loading. ECOMIX C is available in full (0.88 cu ft) and half (0.44 cu ft) bags.
My tank holds a bag and a half of media. Can I use half a bag of ECOMIX C and save the rest for another installation?
Yes. Each bag is factory-blended with all five components in precise ratios. If you use only half, shake the bag thoroughly before loading to ensure even distribution. You can store the remaining half in a sealed container for another installation. To simplify installation, ECOMIX C is offered in both full and half-bag packaging.
What happens if I operate without the first regeneration?
The system will not remove contaminants properly. The first regeneration allows ECOMIX C to self-classify into five layers, which is essential for operation.
Can ECOMIX C handle iron above 15 ppm?
Possibly. Some installations have successfully treated higher iron levels, but consult Urbans Aqua and review a complete water analysis before proceeding.
Does ECOMIX C remove all types of iron, including ferric?
No. It removes ferrous (soluble) iron effectively but is less effective on ferric (oxidized) iron. For ferric iron, install a sediment filter ahead of the ECOMIX unit.
Can I use ECOMIX C if there is aeration or oxidant dosing ahead of the unit?
Not recommended. If oxidation or aeration is required, pretreat the water with:
- A multimedia sediment filter, and
- An activated carbon filter to remove any residual active chlorine.
Is ECOMIX C sensitive to hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)?
No. ECOMIX C performance is not affected by hydrogen sulfide.
Will ECOMIX C remove the odor of H₂S?
It may slightly reduce the odor, but it is not intended for hydrogen sulfide treatment.
Can ECOMIX C be used when hardness is low but iron or tannins are high?
Yes. Program the control valve using raw-water hardness, and set the Day Override to 3–4 days. Consult Urbans Aqua for exact settings.
