Mixed Bed Resin Overview

Ion Exchange Resin Beads
Standard mixed bed resin is a combination of cation (H+) and anion (OH-). It has 2 components:
- Strong Acid Cation (8% Crosslink) in the Hydrogen (H+) form
- Type 1 Strong Base Anion in the Hydroxide (OH-) form.
The manufacturer processes and rinses mixed bed to various levels of purity prior to shipment. Once installed mixed bed resin is ready for immediate service. Care should be taken to prevent separation during installation and shipment to prevent lower throughput.
Mixed bed resin is used to produce deionized or demineralized water. Use of mixed bed resins for residential applications is uncommon. Depending on its level of purity, deionized water is aggressive and potentially strips metals from fixtures, appliances and pipes. Despite its level of purity, drinking deionized water is generally not recommended.

Purolite UCW3700
- Purolite UCW3700 is an ultrapure, mixed-bed ion exchange resin formulated to achieve exceptionally low conductivity and total organic carbon (TOC) levels.
- It combines a hydrogen-form strong acid cation resin and a hydroxide-form strong base anion resin in carefully balanced proportions, pre-mixed under cleanroom conditions.
- This resin is specially processed to meet the demanding requirements of semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and ultrapure water systems, where ionic and organic contamination must be minimized.
Purolite MB400
- Purolite MB400 is a competitively priced, ready-to-use mixed-bed ion exchange resin engineered for producing high-purity, deionized water with very low conductivity and silica levels.
- It combines a strong acid cation resin (H⁺ form) and a strong base anion resin (OH⁻ form) in a carefully balanced ratio, providing efficient removal of dissolved ionic contaminants in a single step.
- MB400 is ideal for service-exchange DI systems, cartridge polishing units, and laboratory applications where consistent purity and long service life are essential.
Thermax MB-115 BG
- Thermax MB115 is a competitively priced, premium-grade mixed-bed ion exchange resin consisting of a strong acid cation resin (H⁺ form) and a strong base anion resin (OH⁻ form), pre-mixed in an optimized ratio to deliver high-purity deionized water.
- It is engineered for single-use applications in service deionization tanks, cartridge polishers, and laboratory systems where ultra-low conductivity and silica levels are required.
- With consistent bead quality and high exchange capacity, MB115 offers long service life and reliable polishing performance across a wide range of systems.
PEDI or SDI Business
- When purchasing resin for PEDI or SDI regeneration plants we advise buying the cation in the regenerated hydrogen form.
- It’s strongly recommended to buy the anion resin in the exhausted chloride form given the swell factor. When in the chloride form there are 12-15% more beads per cubic foot. The anion resin will need to be double regenerated. (Use twice the amount of chemical over double the time.)
- For SDI (portable exchange tank) applications, we recommend using resin components which vary in color.
- Black Cation and Gold Anion
- Gold Cation and White Anion
- UPS stands for Uniform Particle Size. The bead size of the resin doesn’t vary widely.
- UPS resins are recommended for SDI. Separation of mixed bed resin will be more clearly defined.
- Mixed Bed is typically supplied as 50-50 chemical equivalence. However, the ratio of cation to anion can be changed depending on the chemistry of the water or the customer’s process.
- The capacity of the cation resin is greater than the anion. Furthermore, the cation regeneration process is far more effective than the anion regeneration process. For this reason, many PEDI/SDI companies will provide their customers with appropriately sized vessels. Typically, a larger anion tank where there are separate beds or a mixed bed with a 1:1.5 ratio of cation to anion resin.

Mixed Bed Resin for Non-Regenerable Applications – Window Washing, Wire EDM, Auto Washing
- Thermax TULSION® CAM-401 is ready-to-use mixture of gel type cation and anion exchange resins in specially designed volumetric ratio so as to effect complete removal of ionic impurities from water. Deionization or Demineralization Terminology
Separates – Cation resin or anion resin of any type
Separate beds – Single cation (H+) tank; single anion (OH-) tank
- Depending on water analysis and conditions different types of cation and anions are applied.
- Multiples of each type may be installed
Mixed bed – tank containing a mixture of cation and anion resin
- Depending on water analysis and conditions different types of mixed bed resins are applied
- Multiples of each type may be installed
DI Train
- Combination of multiple vessels beginning with cation and ending with mixed bed.
SDI
- Service Deionization – delivery of regenerated DI bottles or tanks of various sizes to end-users requiring pure water for production or boiler feed.
- These locations lack fully functioning (no regeneration) deionizing or softening systems and typically pay rent and regeneration fees when the spent or exhausted tanks are replaced.
- Sale is typically on a contractual basis.
PEDI
- Portable Exchange Deionization – same as SDI
Mixed Bed Polishers
- Commonly placed after RO systems, mixed bed resin removes or reduces unwanted ions thus polishing the water to a higher level of purity.
